What a busy month April is in San Luis
Obispo County! With more and more days of warm, crisp sunshine and with
the flowers in bloom and the mountains green with new growth, the people
of SLO re-discover the outdoors. Here’s what’s going on this
month, and there are some events you will definitely not want to miss!
Wildflower Triathlon
This yearly event is a spectacle of human stamina; one of the largest
outdoor triathlon
events in the state. Hundreds of competitors from all over the world get
together at Lake San Antonio, north of Paso Robles. (see event website)
On top of it being a great event to watch, the hundreds of college students
that pledge their time to helping put on the event make it an awesome
lake front party.
Cal Poly Open
House
The busiest weekend in SLO, thousands of perspective and already accepted
students descend on San Luis Obispo to discover what Poly is all about.
Booths, events, workshops and the ever famous tractor pull (see photos)
make the Open House a huge success every year.
The Arts
As always, the Performing Arts
Center of San Luis Obispo has lots of great shows to offer (from Performing
Arts Center Website):
April 7, 8pm: “Beaux Arts Trio” : For five decades,
the name Beaux Arts has been synonymous with the highest expression of
the piano trio form. Critics and peers alike laud the Trio for its impeccable
taste, luminous musicianship, and remarkable synthesis.
April 23, 8pm: “Bill Charlap Trio”: t’s no
surprise that jazz pianist Bill Charlap would find his inspiration in
popular song: his father was a Broadway composer and his mother a singer
with Benny Goodman’s band. Tony Bennet’s former accompanist,
Charlap’s concerts feature his melodic interpretations of the great
American songbook, championing the work of such notable composers as Duke
Ellington, George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, and Leonard Bernstein. Romantic,
swinging, and eloquent, Bill Charlap is musical elegance personified.
April 30, 8pm: “PDQ Bach: The Vegas Years”: Peter
Schickele - the intellectual guide and "Johann of All Trades"
for this evening of musical mayhem - serves as composer, lecturer, and
performer in PDQ BACH: The Vegas Years.
