The story of Virtual Communications, Inc. (VCI) goes back to early 2001, when Cal Poly City and Regional Planning undergraduate Andrew
Rubin met fellow classmate Jason Gavin in a land use class. It was in this class that the two first learned of QuickTime Virtual Reality, or QTVR, for
the first time. When Rubin suggested the two build a website to document the town of San Luis Obispo, VirtualSLO.com was born. In September of that same
year, the first ten business accounts were added to VirtualSLO.com.
In December, 2003, Rubin and Gavin graduated from Cal Poly with degrees in City and Regional Planning and began working on the business full time.
VirtualSLO.com underwent several revisions up until this point, when Ishmael Hall of Hallway Media was contracted to design and construct revision 4.0 which is the website that is currently in use. It was during this same time that
VirtualSLO.com changed from a general partnership to an S-Corporation, founding the name Virtual Communications, Inc: "Advertising with a Spin."
In the spring
of 2004, Sean Pinto was hired as Technology Manager, bringing with him work experience from IBM and a computer science degree from Cal Poly State University.
Over the past three years, the website has been able to attract over 125 San Luis Obispo County businesses, over 400 real estate listings and well over 5 million visits.
In December, 2004, VCI relocated to its new offices in the Roadhouse Project on south Broad Street in San Luis Obispo.
VirtualSLO.com is touted as "Your Visual Guide to California's Central Coast" and strives to deliver on that slogan every day. With new businesses, attractions and features
being added on a daily basis, VirtualSLO.com remains the only website of its kind on the internet, featuring 360-degree Virtual Tours of everything on its pages.
